Swimming pool safety is extremely important. Failure to give it the attention that it warrants can result in serious injury or even death. Drowning is one the biggest risks associated with pool ownership. Far too many children and even adults drown each year, needlessly. Such accidents are devastating to everyone involved and can, at times, be quite costly. It is always better to take the precautions necessary to keep people safe then it is to deal with the fallout from a serious or even fatal accident.
While not every accident can be prevented, it is important that swimming pool owners do whatever they can to prevent any and all tragedies. Below, is a list of safety tips that if followed, should decrease the number of incidents in your swimming pool. Many of these are fairly basic. However, this doesn’t make them any less important. They are still worth heeding. Many swimming pool accidents occur because homeowners fail to follow pool safety fundamentals.
a.Proper Supervision: Children should never be allowed to swim without being properly supervised. This is true whether or not a child knows how to swim. Young kids are often unable to handle the unexpected crisis that may potentially occur in the pool, such as cramps or extreme tiredness while swimming. Kids playing around are also at risk of hitting their head and becoming unconscious.
b.Proper Fencing: A good pool fence can help keep infants, toddlers and young children away from the pool who can not swim. Any pool fence that you have installed should be high enough so that it can not be easily bounded. It should also have a lock. Be sure to keep the pool fence closed at all times. An open fence will be of no benefit to you or anyone else.
c.Keep the Pool Covered: When you are not using the pool, make sure that it is completely covered.
d.Keep Life Saving Equipment Around: Always have a life saving flotation device nearby in case of an emergency. Taking a CPR class can also be very helpful in keeping individuals swimming in your pool safe.
Proper pool safety can mean the difference between life and death. Not having the correct safety measures in place can place people’s lives in danger. Having a quality pool fence installed and keeping it closed at all times is of utmost important, as is properly supervising children while they are swimming and making sure that the pool is covered when not in use, are all effective ways to keep your guests (invited and uninvited) safe. It is your responsibility to implement proper safety measures at your home. You are your family and guests’ first line of defense.
